Gin-thusiast? Whether you drink it neat, with tonic, or in a timeless martini, here are some recommendations that are sure to put a twist on your next holiday!
Plymouth Gin at Black Friars Distillery
Having mentioned martinis, it would be a sin to not start with Plymouth Gin. One of few PGI protected gins, it’s been around since 1793, so it’s no surprise that it was used in the first ever recorded recipe of the Dry Martini - published in “Stuarts Fancy Drinks” in 1896! It also surpasses any other gin mentioned in the famous Savoy Cocktail Book.
That said, England’s oldest distillery - the Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth, is definitely worth a visit! Their secret recipe has been passed down verbally from and to each master distiller, and you can become privy to this process as they offer several tours, ranging in depth, covering history, distillation process, with a guided tasting and complimentary drinks. Starting at £15, the price of a cocktail in London could get you so much more while staying in the beautiful county of Devon! Alongside the tour, you can enjoy the brasserie, cocktail lounge, and their shop - all in a historical building that dates back to the early 15th century.
Cotswolds Dry Gin at Cotswolds Distillery
For gins that capture the essence of the English countryside, the Cotswolds Distillery offers unique blends of different wildflowers from their local scenery. Their classic dry gin has notes of juniper, citrus, and local lavender, and they offer three variations of their Wildflower Gin, with different botanical and floral flavours, there’s a gin for everyone to go a little wild for.
You’ll get to experience the gin making process, and trial their unique creations for yourself in their tasting tour. If you’d like to blossom into a true spirit-master, they provide a cocktail or a whisky masterclass! For a little G-and-Tea, you can visit their Still House Café, championing more local produce, and enjoyed on a scenic terrace.
So why not stay just 20 minutes away in our charming ‘The Hyde’ lodge… or we have several charming options nearby throughout Warwickshire.
The Lakes Gin at The Lakes Distillery
If you’d love to drown in a lake of gin, or – more reasonably – surround yourself with lakes and sip responsibly… then the Lakes Gin at the Lakes Distillery, in (you guessed it) the Lake District, is the place for you! Their tours include gin, whisky, and vodka making-and-tasting, so this might just be perfect for the all-round spirit connoisseur!
This Classic English Gin is full of Cumbrian botanicals, smooth, with notes of juniper, black pepper, and orange peel. For something even more dangerously easy to drink, you’ll have to pick up their grapefruit pink gin (booking a tour gets you a 10% voucher in the shop!).
This is the perfect daytrip while on a getaway, where you can indulge all your senses in the stunning scenery of Cumbria.
Mermaid Gin at The Isle of Wight Distillery
For a truly rare gin, it makes sense that you might have to go fishing for it, and the Isle of Wight’s first distillery, opened in 2014, is definitely a catch!
Their beautifully bottled Mermaid Gin lives up to its name, with the unique ingredient of rock samphire (locally known as ‘mermaid’s kiss’), this fresh spirit captures the ocean air.
As a Certified B Corporation, drinking really is part of the solution here, keeping nature at the forefront of your holiday in one of our idyllic lodges in the Isle of Wight.
The distillery’s size limits their capacity for tours, but you can still visit, shop, and enjoy a lovely food menu, a spirit taster board, and view their still room through a glass wall!
The Secret Garden Distillery in Edinburgh
Where distillery and perfumery meet! With a truly exciting array of hand-bottled craft gins, made from all-natural ingredients, this is a slice of heaven for the lover of flavoured gins.
Their tours offer insight into Scotland’s rich gin history, their distillation, and a very fragrant look around their botanical gardens, finishing off with a tasting session.
If that’s not enough, you can even make your own gin in their Alchemy Experience!
Amongst floral lavender, rose, and jasmine gins, they have the intriguing blend of a pinot noir gin, and make their own vermouths – perfect for a martini with more than just a twist!
A perfect place to visit when in East Lothian.
The Dyfi Distillery near Snowdonia
Wales' only World Biosphere Reserve, Dyfi, is unsurprisingly host to a range of flora which produce beautiful gin. The DyfiDistillery makes the most of this, creating award-winning gin, and their PGI protected ‘Pollination Gin’.
Made with foraged botanicals from the DyfiForest, Snowdonia, and local marshlands, this is truly the bees-knees of gins!
Though they don’t host tours, Welsh hospitality means their doors are wide open for all gin fanatics to take a look into the distillery and ask about their story - and considering their Original Gin has won gold three times at the World Gin Awards, it’s certainly worth a visit!
This is a lovely place to pick up some gold-standard gin while enjoying a stay in Ceredigion!
If that sounds like your kind of escape, it might just be time to sink into a bubbling hot tub, G&T in hand, and let the day drift away in one of our hot tub lodges.
